Adapted from the book Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
This dynamic musical adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book opened on Broadway in 2019. When teenager Percy Jackson discovers he’s a demigod, he and his friends embark on an epic journey to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt and prevent a war among the gods.
Casting actors ages 13-18 of any gender, non-singing roles available. Depending on the final size of the cast, actors may be cast in multiple roles, so we are looking for versatile, creative performers who can build distinct characters and work in an ensemble. As long as they can sing the designated voice part of the character, actors of any identity, body type and ability may audition for and be considered for any role. As the playwright, Joe Tracz, says, “The characters in The Lightning Thief are gods and heroes – and gods and heroes can look like any of us.”

One of the character monologues or lines from this packet. You do not need to be memorized, but you should be very familiar with the text and have made some choices about the character. If you are interested in a principal role, prepare a monologue, if not, you may prepare one of the shorter god excerpts. You may be asked to read a different piece of text than the one you have prepared.
-
A song. Prepare the cut of “My Grand Plan” OR “Good Kid.” Choose the selection that suits your voice regardless of your gender. Alternatively, you may prepare a pop-rock or musical theatre selection of 30-60 seconds/ that highlights your voice. We will provide recorded accompaniment to the audition cuts from the show (as found below) and a speaker for your recorded accompaniment for other songs. Please bring a devise to play your song from if choosing your own song (a phone works great!) If choosing and bringing your own song, please choose an accompaniment track without vocals.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are interested in auditioning for the role of Percy Jackson please prepare the selection from “Good Kid”. If you are interested in auditioning for Annabeth, prepare the selection from “My Grand Plan”.
A FINAL WORD ABOUT CASTING
Every student who registers will be cast in the production. At Imagine, we believe deeply in providing inclusive, developmentally appropriate performance opportunities for all young artists.
That said, casting is a thoughtful and complex process. Each production is like a large puzzle—one that must balance the needs of the show, the requirements of each character, and the individual educational needs of every student involved.
When determining roles, our directing team considers a variety of factors, including (but not limited to):
-
A student’s schedule availability and attendance
-
Focus, ensemble spirit, and collaboration skills
-
Maturity level and readiness for responsibility
-
Theatre experience and training
-
Acting, singing, dance, and movement skills
-
A student’s previous track record working on Imagine NEPA productions, classes, and camps (when applicable)
We encourage all students and families to approach the casting process with openness. Even if a student is not cast in the role they hoped for, we ask families to trust that each casting decision is made with intention, care, and with the student’s growth in mind. Every role contributes meaningfully to the storytelling, and every performer is essential to the success of the show.
